Turkey Residence Permit Income Requirements 2026

Turkey publishes no income threshold for short-term residence permits — your declaration suffices unless documents are requested. The widely-quoted 1.5× minimum wage figure is a work-permit salary floor. Here's what counts as income, what documents to prepare, and your options if you fall short.

There is no single Turkish residence-permit income threshold, and the figure most sites quote is not a residence-permit rule at all. This guide sets out what Göç İdaresi actually requires, which permit types carry a real income test, and where the widely-repeated number comes from.

Key takeaways

  • Short-term permits have no fixed income threshold. Göç İdaresi states that for short-term and student permits, the applicant's own declaration is sufficient unless the administration requests documents.
  • Family permits do have a test: the sponsor's income must be at least one-third of the minimum wage per person in the family, and the total must not be below the minimum wage.
  • The "1.5× minimum wage" figure circulating online is a work-permit salary floor, set by the Ministry of Labour for employed foreigners. It is not a residence-permit income requirement, and applying it to an ikamet application is a category error.
  • In practice provincial offices still exercise discretion and may ask for bank statements, so prepare evidence even though no statutory figure applies.
  • Applications are concluded within ninety days of being taken into processing.
  • Owning Turkish property worth USD 200,000 or more supports the property sub-category, which does not turn on monthly income.

What is the minimum income for a Turkey residence permit?

For a short-term residence permit, there is no published figure. Göç İdaresi's own guidance is that the applicant's declaration of means is sufficient unless the administration asks for supporting information and documents. You are required to show you can support yourself; you are not required to clear a specific monthly number.

That is a genuine difference from most countries, and it is why you will find no threshold on the official site — not because it is hidden, but because it does not exist for this permit type.

For a family residence permit, a real test applies. The sponsor must show income of not less than one-third of the minimum wage per person in the family, with the total not less than the minimum wage itself. Because it is expressed as a fraction of the minimum wage, the lira figure moves every time the minimum wage is revised.

Where the "1.5× minimum wage" figure comes from

This number is quoted constantly in relocation content, including by sites that present it as the ikamet threshold. It is a work permit figure: the Ministry of Labour and Social Security sets minimum salary floors for foreign employees as multipliers of the minimum wage, tiered by occupation — roughly 1.5× for many standard roles, higher for managerial, medical and specialist positions.

It governs what an employer must pay a foreign worker. It has nothing to do with whether you qualify for a residence permit. If you have been told you need around 49,000 TRY per month to obtain an ikamet, you have been given a work-permit rule for a residence-permit question.

We published that error ourselves until 20 August 2026. It is corrected here.

Accepted income sources

Turkey's provincial migration offices accept a wide range of foreign income sources:

  • Foreign pension or annuity — official pension statements or a letter from your pension provider
  • Remote employment salary — payslips and an employer letter confirming your monthly income
  • Investment income — brokerage or bank statements showing regular dividend or interest deposits
  • Rental income from abroad — tenancy agreements and bank statements showing rent deposits
  • Savings — a visible savings buffer can support an application where income is irregular. There is no published multiple; acceptance is at the provincial office's discretion

Income does not need to originate in Turkey. Foreign-source income is acceptable and may qualify for Turkey's 20-year foreign income tax exemption available to new residents.

Documents required to prove income

Prepare the following before your e-İkamet appointment:

  1. Bank statements — three to six months, original or apostilled copies
  2. Income letters — official confirmation from your employer, pension provider or investment manager stating the monthly amount
  3. Currency conversion — if your income is in a non-TRY currency, a notarised conversion to Turkish lira is commonly requested
  4. Certified Turkish translations — all foreign-language documents must be translated by a sworn translator (yeminli tercüman)

The property route: no monthly income test

If you own Turkish real estate worth at least USD 200,000, you can apply for a residence permit under the property ownership sub-category. The property value satisfies the financial sufficiency requirement without needing monthly income documentation.

If you are worried your income is too low

Because no statutory figure governs short-term permits, "not meeting the threshold" is usually the wrong frame. What provincial offices assess is whether you can plausibly support yourself for the permit's duration. Options that help:

  • Show savings alongside income — a visible buffer addresses the same question a salary would
  • Prepare evidence even though none is mandated — three to six months of bank statements pre-empts a request that may or may not come
  • Property route — Turkish property worth USD 200,000+ supports an application on a different basis entirely
  • Ask your provincial office — discretion sits with them, and practice genuinely varies between provinces
  • Consult a Turkish immigration lawyer for a contested or borderline case

If you are applying for a family permit, the one-third-per-person test above does apply and is worth calculating before you file.
