US worldwide income reporting still applies

American interest in Türkiye has grown materially in 2026, driven by the cost-of-living gap with US cities, the absence of Schengen restrictions, fast residency pathways for retirees and remote workers, and a passport-friendly tax-treaty relationship. Istanbul and Antalya are the two main landing cities; Bodrum and Izmir are growing.

The biggest single thing for Americans to understand: the US taxes worldwide income regardless of where you live. Becoming Turkish tax-resident does not relieve you of US filing or, in many cases, US tax. The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (~$130K threshold for 2026), Foreign Tax Credit, and the US-Türkiye double tax treaty all matter — get personal advice before assuming the move is tax-neutral.

Americans receive an e-Visa on arrival (or pre-arrival via evisa.gov.tr) for stays up to 90 days. Long-term residence requires a Turkish residence permit, typically applied for in-country.

e-Visa on arrival · 90 days

US passport holders get an e-Visa for up to 90 days per stay. Apply pre-arrival at evisa.gov.tr or get on arrival.

Worldwide income reporting follows you

US citizens must file US tax returns on worldwide income regardless of residency. Plan around Foreign Earned Income Exclusion + Foreign Tax Credit.

FATCA-aware banking

Most major Turkish banks are FATCA-compliant and accept American account holders, but smaller banks may decline. Plan accordingly.

International schools widely available

Istanbul has the deepest international school network — Robert College, MEF, Üsküdar American Academy, plus major IB and AP options.

What do Americans need to know before moving to Türkiye?

  • Bring apostilled copies of birth certificate, marriage certificate, and FBI background check (if applying for residence). State Department apostille is the standard.
  • The Bracket-B nationality fee tier in our residence permit calculator is the relevant range for US citizens.
  • Banking: open a Turkish bank account after arrival with a residence permit + tax number. American accounts get FATCA reporting — your Turkish bank will share account info with the IRS.
  • Healthcare: most arrivals buy private Turkish insurance (~$80–250/month per adult). Major hospitals (Acıbadem, Memorial, Liv, American Hospital) provide US-quality care at a fraction of US prices.
  • Driving: US licences are accepted for the first 6 months; after that, exchange or local Turkish licence required.

Do Americans need a visa for Türkiye?

e-Visa for 90 days per stay (apply at evisa.gov.tr or get on arrival). Longer stays require a Turkish residence permit, typically applied for in-country at e-ikamet.gov.tr. US passports are in the Bracket-B range for residence permit fees.

How are Americans taxed when moving to Türkiye?

The US taxes worldwide income regardless of residency — this does not change when you move to Türkiye. Use the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion, Foreign Tax Credit, and the US-Türkiye double tax treaty to plan. The Turkey 20-year foreign income exemption proposal (if enacted) could materially change the math — see our guide.

How big is the American community in Türkiye?

An estimated 8,000–15,000 Americans are long-term residents of Türkiye, primarily in Istanbul, Antalya and Izmir. The community has grown notably since 2022.
