Moving to Türkiye from Germany

Deep historical and family ties — over 3 million people in Germany have Turkish heritage, with significant return migration in 2026.

Key facts

Visa-free entry
90 days within any 180-day window
Largest community
Alanya, Antalya, Istanbul
Banking access
Smooth — no nationality friction
Dual citizenship
Permitted by both countries

The Germany-Türkiye relocation flow is unlike any other country pair. The historical guest-worker generation built a Turkish-German population of over 3 million in Germany, and many of their children and grandchildren are now exploring partial or full return to Türkiye. Add to that German retirees seeking warmer climate at lower cost, remote workers attracted by Istanbul and Antalya, and the picture is one of broad, multi-generational interest.

Since 2024, Germany permits dual citizenship more freely, which has materially changed the calculus — Germans of Turkish descent can now hold both passports without renouncing either, simplifying long-term planning. Türkiye also permits dual citizenship.

Germans receive visa-free entry for 90 days within any 180-day period. Long-term residence requires a Turkish residence permit. German citizenship + Turkish residence is a common posture for partial-year residents and remote workers.

Visa-free · 90/180 days

German passport holders enter Türkiye visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day rolling period.

Dual citizenship — both sides

Both Germany (since 2024) and Türkiye allow dual citizenship — Germans of Turkish heritage no longer need to renounce either to hold both.

German-speaking infrastructure

German-speaking lawyers, doctors and real estate brokers are widely available in Antalya, Alanya, Istanbul and Bodrum — the historical ties run deep.

Strong banking access

German citizens face few barriers to opening Turkish bank accounts. Wise / Revolut / N26 transfers from German accounts are routine.

What do Germans need to know before moving to Türkiye?

  • If you have Turkish heritage, the Mavi Kart (Blue Card) gives most rights of a Turkish citizen without requiring you to drop your German passport — separate path from full Turkish citizenship.
  • Most German arrivals base in Antalya (especially Alanya — large German community), Istanbul or Bodrum.
  • Healthcare: German private health insurance is generally not accepted by Turkish providers — most arrivals buy local Turkish private insurance (~$80–250/month per adult).
  • Driving: German driving licences are accepted for the first 6 months; after that, exchange or local Turkish licence required.
  • Pension: German pensions can be received in Türkiye via the Deutsche Rentenversicherung's international payment programme. Tax treatment is governed by the Germany-Türkiye double tax treaty.
